ASIFA Austria celebrates the 10-Year Anniversary of BEST AUSTRIAN ANIMATION with a 2-week online festival.

18. - 31. January 2021
Festival Portal:

Die Feministische Industriellenkapelle - Clara Jacquemard (student)

The first online festival for the Art of Animation from Austria !

100 films in 13 programs during 2 weeks - 83 films in competition, free international access.

BEST AUSTRIAN ANIMATION also is a competition program, curated in 2021 by Sabine Groschup, Laura Egger-Karlegger and Thomas Renoldner. In 2011 it was organised for the first time at the ONE DAY ANIMATION FESTIVAL in Vienna – so we celebrate it's 10 YEARS ANNIVERSARY. The festival was founded in October 2005 by Thomas Renoldner and organised since then under the umbrella of ASIFA Austria, and was expanded to the 2 DAYS ANIMATION FESTIVAL in 2017.

The basic idea of the Vienna animation festival is to serve as a space for animation students, independent artists, studios and production companies to meet, to discover, to exchange, to enjoy animated films on the big cinema screen, to develope new projects,  …and to celebrate and to have a good time! Another important intention of the festival is to give an annual overview about the relevant production of Austrian animation, and to present the very rich variety of what animation can be: films produced by students, professionals and commercial studios; from narrative to experimental; from analog to digital and including all only thinkable artistic intentions and personal and general contents.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we had to move the festival from FILMCASINO Vienna in November 2020 to January 2021 and this festival platform. The circumstances are worse than we ever would have liked to imagine, but this new situation also opens new perspectives and chances for the Austrian animation artists. For the first time their films can be presented in such a big number internationally.

After the 2 weeks of Online Animation Festival, on 1. February 2021 we will open the BEST AUSTRIAN ANIMATION ONLINE DATABASE – also at
We are more than happy, that after 10 years of hard work for the festival and competition program, we can finally fulfill this long-time wish! The BEST AUSTRIAN ANIMATION ONLINE DATABASE will serve as a research platform about contemporary animation from Austria in the coming years, including all ever shown animated films since this competition program exists. It will include basic informations about all films, and  a huge part of the artists will give access to their films in full length and other will let you watch excerpts and teasers.

Note All films in full length from BEST AUSTRIAN ANIMATION 2020 can only be seen at the online festival, from 18. - 31. January 2021.

18. – 24. January:  Festival – CINEMA

In the Festival – CINEMA the films will be presented according to a fixed schedule, and will be available for 24 hours after their premiere.

The sections are: COMMISSIONED FILMS (1 program), NARRATIVE (2 programs), EXPERIMENTAL (2 programs) and MUSIC VIDEO (3 programs). The newly opened BEST AUSTRIAN STUDENT ANIMATION Competition presents 22 films in 3 programs.

Each program can be viewed within 24 hours of it's online premiere at and then again, with some exceptions, in the Festival Video Library between 25 - 31 January.
