The symposium is an opportunity to explore a diverse range of practices and connections between animation and the visual arts, with a number of outstanding artists/filmmakers.
All presentations and panel discussions include film screenings, extracts and/or slide illustrations, and Q & A with the audience.
Among the highly profiled participants will be:
Al Rees (Senior Research Fellow in Film, Royal College of Art), Ann Course (UK) and Nicole Hewitt (Croatia/UK) (artists,filmmakers), Suzanne Buchan (Animation Research Centre), Gareth Evans (critic/programmer), South African artist and filmmaker William Kentridge, Polish filmmaker Jerzy Kucia, artist, writer and lecturer David Campany, Canadian filmmakers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, American figurative artist Jeanine Breaker, filmmakers Ruth Lingford, Jonathan Hodgson, Stuart Hilton, Richard Kenworthy, Michael Dudok de Wit, Joanna Quinn and Caroline Leaf.

Anima Mundi 2002 - Call for Entries

Dear Filmmaker,
This year, ANIMA MUNDI, the International Animation Festival of Brazil, will celebrate its 10th anniversary! We are now accepting entries for the 2002 edition.
ANIMA MUNDI will take place from July 12 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro and from July 24 to 28 in São Paulo.
ANIMA MUNDI has become one of the biggest animation festivals of the world and the most important one in Latin America. Last year, more than 60,000 people attended the event. Besides the film and video screenings, the festival programme will include special programs, retrospectives, workshops and lectures presented by special guests whose works have enriched the animation art. The awards for the films and videos in competition will be granted by the audience and by a professional jury.
Closing date for entries: April 15th.

The Ottawa Festival has announced to open a new category for Official Competition:
"Any frame by frame or computer assisted animated film or video made for cinema or television may be entered.
Competition categories include:
Independent Short Films under 50 minutes, First Professional Film, Films Made for Children, Graduate Film, Educational Film, Advertising Film, Station Identification, Music Videos, Television Specials, Television Series, Animation for the Internet
and for the first time: Animated Feature Film."

The Department of Cinema at San Francisco State University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Animation, who will also coordinate our animation program. Successful candidates should possess an MFA or equivalent, teaching experience at the university level, a body of independent work and strength in both filmmaking skills and current technologies. The candidate should be an animation artist with personal vision who will give innovative direction and focus to the Department's animation emphasis, which exists within a strong program of independent film and new media production. The candidate should have a working knowledge of animation history and criticism, and leadership experience in order to coordinate our animation curriculum with live action, with related areas in the arts, and with bay area animation groups like ASIFA, PIXAR and ILM.
One of 8 departments in the College of Creative Arts, the Cinema Department has 17 full time tenure-track faculty, together with some 30 part-time/associate faculty, serving some 800 film students. Committed to the teaching of production and studies as a common enterprise, we offer a general BA degree in Cinema, an MA in Cinema Studies, and an MFA in Cinema, and a specialized animation emphasis open to both graduate and undergraduate students. San Francisco state university is a large urban university serving a diverse student body in liberal arts, sciences, and professional programs, and is part of the 23-campus California state university system. The mission of the University is to create an environment for learning that promotes an appreciation of scholarship, freedom, and human diversity; fosters excellence in instruction and intellectual accomplishment; and provides broadly accessible higher education.
