International Animation Day / 2005 Planned Activities

THE PROGRAMME OF THE INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY 2005. In 2002, the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) launched its "International Animation Day" to commemorate the first public performance of Emile Reynaud's Optical Theatre at the Grevin Museum in Paris in 1892. Today, almost thirty countries ASIFA groups, mostly representing different countries of all over the world, are ready to celebrate this World Day. The ASIFA also invited all animation supporters to participate to this celebration, through screening animated films, organizing workshops for the beginners, exhibiting artwork and stills, providing technical demonstrations, etcetera Some of us have taken this opportunity to spread this event over several days involving numerous partners. Such a celebration is an outstanding opportunity for putting the « Art of Animation » in the limelight, as this art is not yet easily accessible to quite a large fraction of the public. A BRIEF SURVEY OF THE CELEBRATIONS SOUTH AND NORTH AMERICA : In ARGENTINA, the 4th International Film Festival for Children and young people of Buenos Aires (www.nuevamirada.com) organizes a special day with the animator Oscar Desplats, for a lot of screenings of animated films, lectures on the animated film in Argentina, a demo of animation techniques and a meeting with directors and animators. This event will also be celebrated at the Córdoba International Animation Festival (http://www.animafestival.com.ar), which will offer screenings of Argentinean shorts, an Iranian programme, French and Bulgarian students‚ diploma films, and a lecture on Argentinean animation. In BOLIVIA, there will be four days of celebrations at La Paz, including film shows, exhibitions, meetings. A travelling cinema will provide screenings and exhibitions in various towns. On top of that, the Film and Visual Arts School of La Paz will take this opportunity to inaugurate its brand new animation department. In BRAZIL, the Brazilian Animated Film Association (www.abca.org.br) in Rio de Janeiro will organize an award presentation of the best Brazilian animated films of the year, as well as screenings of Brazilian, Portuguese, French and Canadian shorts, while professional meetings will be organized in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Porto Alegre. Additionally, the issue of the first Canadian investigation into the animation industry will be revealed in São Paulo. In Belo Horizonte, screenings, workshops, exhibitions and professional meetings are being organized. In Montreal, CANADA, the National Film Board of Canada (www.onf.ca) and the Cinémathèque Québécoise (www.cinematique.qc.ca) will give the public the opportunity to discover many films. Jacques Drouin, specialized in pin screen animation, will hold a Master Class at the Cinémathèque. There will be meetings with directors, an animated itinenary (parcours animé) and even a contest for winning seats at the Annecy Festival. In the UNITED STATES, the ASIFA Colorado Group (www.asifa-colorado.org) organizes a costume party supplemented with a variety of screenings. ASIFA Central (www.swcp.com/animate) organizes a series of screenings in various venues (universities, movie theaters) in Michigan. ASIFA San Francisco (www.asifa-sf.org) offers a show of award-winning films of the 36th Festival organized by ASIFA East in New York. ASIFA Northwest (www.asifa.net/usa-northwest) organizes simultaneously in Portland and Seattle an Animators’Celebration – an open event where every director may bring his film and screen it to the public. Finally ASIFA Hollywood (www.asifa-hollywood.org) devotes an afternoon to restored 35mm prints of George Herriman’s famous Krazy Kat cartoon series (1916-1939, IFS and Mintz studios). EUROPE : ASIFA AUSTRIA (asifa.net/austria) organizes in Vienna an evening including the work of independent New York animators and of young Austrian directors, among whom Signe Bauman, the Latvian and New York filmmaker. The BELGIAN Folioscope Association (www.folioscope.be) proposes a best of   Brussels’ Anima Festival at Mons, Ronquières and Brussels. ASIFA BULGARIA at Sofia presents a tribute to Lucky Luke and offers Bulgarian animation, a tribute to   Slav Bakalov, classics of world animation and a performance of French students’diploma films at the Sofia Institute of the Arts of Film and the Theatre. In Zagreb, ASIFA CROATIA, the Animafest Festival and the Croatian Film Club organize an award-winning ceremony of the best Croatian animated films produced this year. In Saarbrücken, GERMANY, the Hungarian Revelations Association (jpsalvadori.free.fr/revelations/events_fr.html) and the Saarländisches Filmbüro proposes a programme of 10 animated films made by young Hungarian filmmakers. In Helsinki, ASIFA FINLAND, in conjunction with the Finnish Film Archive, presents a documentary about the history of the German animated film, and together with the Animatricks Festival (www.animatricks.net), an evening devoted to the best recent Finnish films. It also takes this opportunity to include a contest of films lasting less than one minute. And the programme of French students’diploma films is to be screened in several towns. In FRANCE, the AFCA, the French Association of Animated Films (www.afca.asso.fr) organizes the « animated film feast » (La fête du cinéma d’animation), one whole week of celebrations in 250 places all over the French territory (from Oct. 26th to Nov. 1st). Paul Driessen is this year’s guest of honour. Among many guest and events : the precence of Kihachiro Kawamoto, Daniel Szczechura and the producer Nico Crama ; exhibitions of the work of Jean-François Laguionie, Jacques Colombat, Ladislas Starewitch, the studio Ghibli ; retrospectives of the films by Jean-François Laguionie, the scores of the musician Christophe Héral, Dutch animation, African animation and Brazilian animation, some schools and studios welcomes visitors. On the 28th of October, AFCA will organize a screening of films selected to the theme « Shadows and Light » with demo of pin screen and silhouette animation in the Pompidou Center. ASIFA HUNGARY (www.manifeszt.hu) will organize in Budapest a "Non-stop animation screening" at the Hungarian Academy of Crafts and Design. In the evening, in collaboration with Anifest (Animation festival for young filmmakers) there will be several screenings in "Szimpla Winter Garden Cinema". Here we will screen the Slovakian Film Archive's VSMU animation school of Bratislava’s selection, a selection of contemporary Hungarian animations, generation as well as a programme of students’diploma films from the different French animation schools. At the Grand Café In Szeged ( www.grandcafe.szeged.hu ), 4 screenings with, among others, the award-winning films of the Kecskemét Festival, the Hungarian animated film classics of the 60’s, the films of the younger generation as well as a programme of students’diploma films from the different French animation schools, a tribute to Sandor Reisenbüchler and a meeting with Maria Horvath. In PORTUGAL, the House of Animation at Porto (www.casa-da-animacao.pt) proposes to discover digital animation by means of a video exhibition and through workshops. It will also present films from the French animation school Supinfocom, a preview of Portuguese director Regina Pessoa’s newest film and a programme of films competing for the Golden Cartoons (Cartoons d’or,   award winners at big European Festivals). In the country as a whole, a score of towns will participate in showing this programme. ASIFA RUMANIA at Bucharest proposes to discover French and Rumanian animation, with the help of Jean-Claude Palluau, president of Le Collodion Humide (wet collodion) Association ; the films of the animation students at the National University of the Theatre and Cinema (Unatc). It also offers visits to three animated film studios and will organize a « In memoriam » projection to remember Rumanian animators who passed away last years. The French Institute of Edinburgh, SCOTTLAND (www.ifecosse.org.uk) proposes a programme of French students’ diploma films from different French animation schools. In SERBIA & MONTENEGRO, several screenings will take place at Belgrade, Cacak, Vranje, Nis and other towns of Serbia. In Madrid, SPAIN, the Animadrid Festival (www.animadrid.com) offers a choice of award-winning films of the latest Festival and organizes screenings in various libraries throughout the town. The ANIMAC Festival at Lleida (www.animac.info) offers a selection of the best films of the latest Festival, as well as a programme of diploma films of the different French animation schools. The association Cinetic in Catalonia offers at The Bisbal of Emporda, at Gireona and the Barcelona Filmoteca a film-concert centred round the work of Segundo de Chomon, the pioneer of Spanish animation ; there is to be an exhibition and a screening honouring Joaquim Puigvert, a specialist in animated scratchings on film ; and also screenings of the French films from the Folimage studio as well as Iranian films. The professional animation school of Gallega at Vigo in Galicia (www.egapanimacion.com)   features exhibitions of the work of José Miguel Ribeiro and Miguel Angel Prado , screenings and a meeting of Portuguese and Galician professionals. The SWISS Animated Film Group (www.gsfa-stfg.ch) organizes screenings of Swiss shorts, Millenium Actress by Satoshi Kon and Lamu, Beautiful Dreamer by Mamoru Oshii will both have its première in Switzerland at Geneva, Lausanne, Zürich, Luzern, Basel and Bern. The International animation day is also celebrated at the Animation Museum of Riga in LATVIA (www.muzeji.lv) and by The National CZECH Film Center of Prague (www.nfa.cz).   AFRICA: In ALGERIA, the Patrimony Association, jointly with the French Institute, organize screenings of Moroccan, Iranian, French and Bulgarian films at Algiers. In Accra, GHANA, the very 1st Festival of African Animation, organized by the National Film and Television Institute, will take place from the 22nd to the 28th October. On this occasion, there are to be screenings, workshops, exhibitions and meetings of the professionals of animation from Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. The French cultural centre and Bamako’s City of Children in MALI organize two days of screenings. The International Animated Film Festival of Meknès (www.ambafrance-ma.org/ficam) in MOROCCO will screen Belleville Rendez-Vous by Sylvain Chomet and the short film programme Loulou and Other Wolves, which will be supplemented with an exhibition. The District Film Festival of Dakar in SENEGAL (www.festivaldufilmdequartier.com) will screen African films and a programme of students’diploma films from different French animation schools. The International animation day is also celebrated by The French cultural Centre of Douala in CAMEROUN.   ASIA: The Cultural Centre of Phnom Penh in CAMBODIA (www.ambafrance-kh.org) proposes a programme of diploma films from different French animation schools. ASIFA INDIA will hand over the prizes to the award-winners of the best Indian animated films ; it proposes a sampling of the best productions chosen by ASIFA San Francisco and USA Northwest and a panel dealing with « Animation and Education ». Bill Dennis, Noureddin Zarrinkelk and Prahlad Kakkar will be special guests for the event. ASIFA IRAN organizes in Tehran an animation show plus panel of experts for discussions in three nights, workshops of animation (2D and 3D) in three mornings, and seminars and round tables in three afternoons. ASIFA ISRAEL organizes events between Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 in 5 places.  Several additional events await final OK. Minshar Art school, Tel Aviv, celebrates opening of its new animation department. with Pace of Peace and its  documentary, most likely to be presented by producer Franco La Torre. And a 2nd program of AFCA’s selection of French students‚ diploma films. The Animation Center, Tel Aviv, will show a programme relating to the theme of identity, with a lecture, and Pace of Peace . The Haifa Cinematheque will screen ASIFA 2005 (Israeli animation) prize winners and nominees. Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, holds two events: A special meeting in Jaffa of the animation department’s 37 lecturers where each will show his first film, and a screening at Bezalel of John Canemaker’s new The Moon and the Son, Pace of Peace and its documentary, AFCA‚ selection of French students diploma films. At Kyoto and Hiroshima, ASIFA JAPAN (www.asifa.jp) proposes screenings of French students’ diploma films ; the Award Winning Titles of the ASIFA-East 36th Animation Festival, a best of  the Hiroshima Festival and three Japanese short film programmes. In Amman, JORDAN, the Abu Mahjoob animation studios will provide animated film shows with the assistance of the Royal Film commission (www.mahjoob.com) In Katmandu, NEPAL, the Education Department of Pentasys Technologies (www.pentasys.com.np) will present Nepalese student films and will organize several workshops. In Tachkent, UZBEKISTAN, Uzbekfilm studios organize screenings of films by the Institute of Arts of Luzern, the Film Institute of Moscow, French students’ diploma films and propose a meeting with the Uzbek directors Nazim Tulyakhodzayev. The Animation Day is also celebrated by the French Institute of Taipei at TAÏWAN (www.fitaipei.org)   OCEANIA : In Brisbane, AUSTRALIA, Queenland’s Animators Group (www.qa.org.au) will showcase recent animation produced in Queensland with talks by the filmakers, followed by a programme of diploma films from different French animation schools. LE PROGRAMME DE LA JOURNEE MONDIALE DU CINEMA D’ANIMATION 2005   En 2002, l'Association internationale du film d'animation (Asifa) lançait la journée mondiale du cinéma d'animation pour commémorer la première projection publique du théâtre optique d'Émile Reynaud à Paris, au Musée Grévin, le 28 octobre 1892. Les différents groupes nationaux de l'ASIFA (présents dans une trentaine de pays) se préparent à célébrer cette journée mondiale. L’Asifa invite tous les amoureux de l’animation à se joindre à cette célébration en organisant des projections, des ateliers d'initiation, en montant une exposition, une démonstration technique... Certains groupes ont saisi cette occasion pour lancer dans leur pays une manifestation sur plusieurs jours, en impliquant de nombreux partenaires et lieux culturels. Cette célébration est une occasion unique de mettre la lumière sur le cinéma d'animation, un art qui connaît un engouement sans précédent dans le monde, mais dont la diffusion reste encore restreinte et donc difficile d'accès pour une grande partie du public.   Aperçu des célébrations.   AMÉRIQUES En ARGENTINE , le 4e Festival international du film pour l’enfance et la jeunesse de Buenos Aires (www.nuevamirada.com) organisera une journée spéciale avec l’animateur M. Oscar Desplats, avec de nombreuses projections de films d’animation, des conférences sur le cinéma d’animation en Argentine, une démonstration de technique et une rencontre avec des réalisateurs et animateurs de films d’animation. L’évènement sera aussi célébré par le Festival international du film d’animation de Cordoba (www.animafestifal.com.ar) avec un panorama de courts métrages argentins, un programme iranien, des films de fin d’études français et bulgares et une conférence sur le cinéma d’animation argentin. À São Paulo seront de plus présentés les résultats de la première mission d’études canadienne sur l’industrie de l’animation. À Belo Horizonte seront organisés des projections, des ateliers, des expositions et des rencontres professionnelles >Au CANADA, à Montréal, l’Office national du film du Canada (www.onf.ca) et la Cinémathèque québécoise (www.cinematique.qc.ca) permettront au public de découvrir de nombreux films, et proposeront une Master Class à la Cinémathèque avec Jacques Drouin, spécialiste de l’animation à l’écran d’épingles. Des rencontres avec des réalisateurs, un parcours animé et même un concours pour gagner des places pour le Festival d’Annecy. >Aux ETATS-UNIS, le groupe Asifa Colorado (www.asifa-colorado.org) organisera une fête costumée agrémentée de projections diverses. Asifa Central (www.swcp.com/animate) organisera différentes projections dans des lieux variés (Universités, cinémas) du Michigan. Asifa San Francisco (www.asifa-sf.org) projettera les films primés lors du 36e festival organisé à New York par Asifa Est. Asifa Nord-Ouest (www.asifa.net/usa-northwest) organisera simultanément à Portland et à Seattle une “ Fête des animateurs ”, une scène ouverte où chaque réalisateur peut apporter son film et le projeter à l’assistance. Enfin Asifa Hollywood (www.asifa-hollywood.org) consacrera une après-midi à la célèbre série Krazy Kat (1916-39) de George Herriman, avec des copies 35mm restaurées.   EUROPE A Sarrebruck en ALLEMAGNE, l’association Révélations hongroises (jpsalvadori.free.fr/revelations/events_fr.html) et le Saarlandisches Filmbüro proposeront un programme de 10 films d’animation de jeunes réalisateurs hongrois. L’Asifa AUTRICHE (asifa.net/austria) organisera à Vienne une, soirée consacrée à l’animation indépendante New-yorkaise et aux jeunes réalisateurs autrichiens, en présence de nombreux réalisateurs, dont Signe Bauman, cinéaste Lettone et New-yorkaise. l’Association Folioscope en BELGIQUE (www.folioscope.be) proposera un best of du festival Anima de Bruxelles à Mons, Ronquières et Bruxelles. Avec aussi entre autres invités et événements, la présence  deKihachiro Kawamoto, Daniel Szczechura et le producteur Nico Crama, des expositions consacrées à Jean-François Laguionie, Jacques Colombat, Ladislas Starewitch, le studio Ghibli, des rétrospectives consacrées à Jean-François Laguionie, le musicien Christophe Héral, l’animation néerlandaise, l’animation africaine et l’animation brésilienne et des journées portes ouvertes dans des écoles et des studios d’animation. Le 28 octobre, l’Afca organisera au Centre Pompidou, une séance consacrée au thème “ Ombres et lumières ”, avec démonstration de la technique de l’écran d’épingle et de l’animation de silhouette. ASIFA HONGRIE (www.manifeszt.hu) organisera à Budapest une séance d’animation non-stop, ouverte au public, à l’Académie de l’artisanat et du graphisme. Le soir, au Cinéma Jardin d’hiver de Szimpla et en collaboration avec Anifest (Festival d’animation pour jeunes réalisateurs), projections de films des Archives nationales du film de Slovaquie et de l’école VSMU de Bratislava, une sélection de films hongrois contemporains, ainsi qu’un programme de films de fin d’études de différentes écoles françaises d’animation. Au PORTUGAL, la Maison de l’animation à Porto (www.casa-da-animacao.pt).proposera de découvrir l’animation numérique par le biais d’une exposition vidéo et d’ateliers. Elle présentera aussi des films de l’école d’animation française Supinfocom, une avant-première du nouveau film de la réalisatrice portugaise Regina Pessoa et le programme des films concourrant au Cartoons d’Or (films primés dans les grands festivals européens). Dans l’ensemble du pays, une vingtaine de villes participeront en projetant ce programme. L’Asifa ROUMANIE, à Bucarest, propose de découvrir l’animation française et roumaine avec Jean-Claude Palluau, président de l’association Le Collodion humide, de découvrir les films des étudiants en animation de l’Université nationale de théâtre et cinéma (Unatc). Elle propose aussi la visite de trois studios d’animation et organisera une sénace “ In Memoriam ” en hommage au animateurs roumains disparus ces dernières années. En SERBIE et MONTENEGRO plusieurs projections seront organisées à Belgrade, Cacak, Vranje, Nis et autres villes de Serbie. Le Groupement SUISSE du film d’animation (www.gsfa-stfg.ch) organisera des projections de courts métrages suisses, et en première Suisse de Millenium Actress de Satoshi Kon et Lamu, Beautifull Dreamer de Mamoru Oshii à Genève, Lausanne, Zürich, Lucerne, Bale et Bern. La journée sera aussi célébrée par le Musée de l’animation à Riga en LETTONIE (www.muzeji.lv) et aux Archives nationales du film TCHEQUES à Prague (www.nfa.cz).   AFRIQUE En ALGERIE, l’association Patrimoine, en collaboration avec l’Institut français organisera à Alger des projections de films d’animation marocains, iraniens, français et bulgares. À Accra au GHANA aura lieu la première édition du Festival d’animation africaine (22-28 octobre), organisée par le National Film and Television Institute (www.nafti.edu.gh). Ce festival sera l’occasion de projections, d’ateliers, d’expositions et de rencontres de professionnels de l’animation du Mali, Nigeria, Sénégal, Burkina Faso, Bénin, Ghana, Kenya et Afrique du Sud. Le Centre culturel français et la Cité des enfants de Bamako au MALI organiseront deux jours de projections. Le Festival international du film d’animation de Meknès (www.ambafrance-ma.org/ficam) au MAROC projettera Les Triplettes de Belleville de Sylvain Chomet et le programme de courts métrages Loulou et autre loups, accompagné d’une exposition. Le Festival du film de quartier de Dakar au SENEGAL (www.festivaldufilmdequartier.com) proposera des projections de films africains et un programme de films de fin d’études de différentes écoles d’animation françaises. La journée sera aussi célébrée par le Centre culturel français de Douala au CAMEROUN (www.ccfdouala.com)   ASIE Le Centre culturel de Phnom Penh au CAMBODGE (www.ambafrance-kh.org) proposera un programme de films de fin d’études de différentes écoles d’animation françaises. L’Asifa INDE remettra les prix des meilleurs films d’animation indiens, proposera un panel des meilleures productions proposées par l’Asifa San Francisco et USA Nord-Ouest et une rencontre sur le thème “ Animation et Éducation ”. Bill Dennis, Noureddin Zarrinkelk et Prahlad Kakkar seront les invités d’honneur de cet événement. Asifa ISRAËL organisera plusieurs événements entre le 27 octobre et le 3 novembre. L’Ecole d’art de Minshar à Tel-Aviv célébrera l’ouverture de son nouveau département d’animation avec Pace of Peace et son documentaire, présenté par le producteur Franco La Torre, puis diffusera un programme de films de fin d’études de différentes écoles françaises d’animation. Le Centre d’animation de Tel-Aviv projettera un programme sur le thème de l’identité, une conférence sur le thème et Pace of Peace. INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY 2004

THE PROGRAMME OF THE INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY 2004 In 2002, the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) launched its "International Animation Day" to commemorate the first public performance of Emile Reynaud's Optical Theatre at the Grévin Museum in Paris in 1892. Today, almost thirty countries ASIFA groups, mostly representing different countries of all over the world, are ready to celebrate this World Day. We also invited all animation supporters to participate to this celebration, through screening animated films, organizing workshops for the beginners, exhibiting artwork and stills, providing technical demonstrations, etcetera. Some of us have taken this opportunity to spread this event over several days (for instance 9 days in France, 5 days in Portugal, 3 days in Iran and various length and different activities in other countries) involving numerous partners. Such a celebration is an outstanding opportunity for putting the "Art of Animation" in the limelight, as this art is not yet easily accessible to quite a large fraction of the public. After the rather unobtrusive previous first two celebrations, this year's World-wild International Animation Day (28th October) is being celebrated in more than 30 countries! Here is a survey of what to expect. Argentina The animation department of the University of Buenos Aires will show a pixilation short specially made on this occasion, plus a demonstration of animation techniques, and it will screen student films of the French animation schools. www.ucine.edu.ar The international animated film festival of Cordoba (Anima) will offer various screenings for 3 days, introducing a selection of animated films produced in the province of Cordoba and more particularly the films of the experimental animation Centre as well as three retrospective programmes of the festival. www.animafestival.com.ar Austria ASIFA Austria composed a selection of international animated film entitled Les Enfants terribles de l'animation. It includes provocative, sexual explicit, political radical and other strange films from Mariola Brillowska, Phil Mulloy, Ruth Lingford, Heinrich Sabl, Andreas Hykade and Mara Mattuschka. The programme will be shown in Vienna on the 28th october 2004 and will tour around in Austria, and probably neighbour countries afterwards. asifa.net/austria/28OKT04 Belgium The Folioscope association (Brussels Anima Festival) will launch its first "animated Tuesday" on 26 th October (Brussels, Arenberg Galeries Theatre) with a programme featuring the best of Anima 2003-2004. www.folioscope.be Brazil In Rio de Janeiro, ABCA (Brazilian Animated Film Association) will provide a screening of Planet Earth, a film made for the United Nations Organization by a collective of Brazilian filmmakers and animators, as well as a selection of French students' graduation films of 2003. www.abca.org In Belo Horizonte, there will be one weeks' celebration in three different places, which will include workshops, debates and screenings. There will also be a big feast centring round the theme of animation on October 28th, with two concerts and DJs playing a special selection of animation-related music. November the 1st, there will be a video exhibit at Palacio das Artes with a selection of brazilian animation shorts. Bulgaria At the Bulgarian Nacionala Filmoteka in Sofia, ASIFA Bulgaria presents 6 programmes: a selection of Bulgarian children's films; the best of Bulgarian animation; a selection of Canadian short films; Russian films made between the two World Wars; a selection of the best animated films in the world from its own stock of films, as well as a selection of films from French animation schools. The Czech cultural centre of Sofia is showing a selection of Czech films. Canada The Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montréal and ASIFA Canada will be srreening a " 10 countries/10 films program ". Czech Republic The National Film Archives of Prague proposes a Czechoslovakian short film program including films made by Milan Klikar, Jaroslava Havettova, Vlastimil Herold, Jan Svnakmajer, Alois Mikulka and Vladimir Lehky (1968-1986) Finland ASIFA Finland proposes in the city of Oulu a lecture with topic "Finnish Animation 100 years". In the cities of Tampere, Turku and Helsinki a screening of new Hungarian animation In Helsinki The Finnish Film Archive will screen Paul Grimault's The King and Mr Bird. India ASIFA India is organizing a national competition for all the films produced in India in 2003. Its jury includes directors and animators from ASIFA San Francisco. A panel brings together some of the greatest talents of Indian animation. Indonesia The ANIMA association (the organizers of the Animasi Festival in Djakarta) is featuring a one week long an animation workshop at Djakarta's art centre and an exhibition. Iran ASIFA Iran will be organizing an exhibition of Iranian and international animation film's posters. Workshops of computer and traditional animation, animation shows with lectures by famous artists figures in different eras of art, a panels of animators, directors and producers. In other cultural centers, free animation shows for children, for art schools' students, for public. Other towns in the country, like Hamedan, Kerman and Isfahan will celebrate by showing art animation to the audiance. Israel The Tel Aviv Cinémathèque announces two screenings : Jonathan and Marsha Zur's documentary on Russian animation: Magia Russica (2004) and Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. www.cinema.co.il The Academy of the arts and graphic arts of Bezalel of Jerusalem presents a selection of recent French graduation films. www.bezalel.ac.il Italy Asifa Italy is to organize evening performances in Turin and Genova. www.asifaitalia.org Jordan A tribute will be paid to Imad Hajjaj, a personality reaching national status in the field of comic strips, editorial cartoons and animated cartoons. During the debate, Estonian, Polish, Czech and Hungarian animated films are to be screened. www.niaf.nl Portugal The House of Animation at Porto is organizing a tour of European animation shorts in 14 towns in this country, from October 25th to 31st. A few of them will also feature exhibitions and workshops for beginners. The House of animation also presents a thematic film show centring upon poetry; a workshop for the initiation of beginners in animation; an exhibition and technical demonstrations. www.casa-da-animacao.pt Rumania In Bucharest and in Iasi are taking place screenings of the latest films produced in Rumania (shorts, students' films and films for TV), an exhibition of original drawings, backgrounds and storyboards and a film show of French animation schools presented jointly by ASIFA Rumania and the Union of filmmakers. Serbia and Montenegro ASIFA Serbia and Montenegro are organizing film shows in Belgrade, Tchatchak, Vranye, Pantchevo and Novi-Sad. The Balkanima festival, which is taking place at this period, will pay a tribute to French animation. Slovenia ASIFA Slovenia will organize a three days's Slovenian animated film festival at Izola, specially to celebrate this event. JOURNÉE MONDIALE DU CINEMA D'ANIMATION 2004

LE PROGRAMME DE LA JOURNEE MONDIALE DU CINEMA D'ANIMATION En 2002 l'Association internationale du film d'animation (ASIFA) lançait une journée mondiale du cinéma d'animation pour commémorer la première projection publique du théâtre optique d'Émile Reynaud à Paris, au Musée Grévin, en 1892. Les différents groupes nationaux de l'ASIFA (présente dans une trentaine de pays dans le monde) se préparent à célébrer cette journée mondiale. Nous invitons aussi tous les amoureux de l'animation à participer à cette célébration en organisant des ateliers d'initiation, en montant une exposition, une démonstration technique... Certains d'entre nous avons saisi cette occasion pour lancer une manifestation sur plusieurs jours, en impliquant de nombreux partenaires et plusieures villes. Cette célébration est une occasion unique de mettre la lumière sur le cinéma d'animation, un art qui connaît un engouement sans précédent dans le monde, mais qui reste encore difficile d'accès pour une grande partie du public. Après deux premières éditions plutôt discrètes, cette année la Journée mondiale du cinéma d'animation (28 octobre) s'épanouit dans plus de 30 pays ! Aperçu des célébrations. Slovénie L'Asifa Slovénie organisera durant trois jours à Izola, un festival d'animation slovène pour célébrer l'événement.
