 Biography

Leslie Bishko is an experimental computer animator. Her work combines abstraction and symbolism, exploring themes of rhythm, pattern and the relationship of sound and image.

Leslie received a BFA from the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA), and an MA from the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design at Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio, USA). She moved to Canada to research the design of a computer animation interface based on Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, British Columbia). As an outgrowth of her interest in combining animation and dance, she became certified as a Laban Movement Analyst and continues to apply this movement theory to her work and teaching.

Leslie lectured in Classical Animation at Ohio State University and the Centre for Digital Imaging and Sound (Burnaby). She directed the Computer Animation Program at VanArts and is now a member of the animation faculty at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver).

Leslie has published articles on animation in Animation Journal, Animation World Magazine, FPS and the ASIFA Canada magazine. She is also on the board of ASIFA Canada

Gasping for Air (1993)
Synopsis: In a late summer landscape where trees and grass grow amidst industrial decay, a rusted autombile muffler flounders in a stream struggling for breath, while a stainless steel kitchen pot flies playfully through the air. This piece is an expression of the desire for harmony, within oneself and within one's environment, and the play of tensions between the body and mind.
